The Road to Freedom: Live in Concert - Chris De Burgh (Import)

This is a wonderful DVD with Chris de Burgh at his best with only his guitar and piano. Over the years his voice has only grown better and he can still reach the high notes. Recorded live in Germany at Stadthalle Bielefeld, on 28th May 2004. Chris De Burgh performs several tracks from his then latest album ‘The Road to Freedom’, along with some classic ones, a total of 21 pieces, including a Medley. His interaction with the German audience is evident and so pleasing.

This DVD shows an intimate performance - although in a large hall, it's Chris de Burgh, so there's no band or other band members to hide behind and he comes across as very candid and truly enjoying performing solo. It's remarkable to also see how he manages to control his music and be a vocalist and an instrumentalist (i.e. piano and guitar player) he is to be able to carry a full concert without anything else in the form of musical backing. I like how, at one point in the middle of the concert, he wanders around the audience, singing a medley of songs.

And now for the songs he sings, well you guessed right, they’re all here from Sailing Away which was recorded with big production on the original album to this rather basic format and makes them work. The Lady In Red is the best song Chris De Burgh ever wrote, you also have When Winter Comes, Five Past Dreams, Borderline, High On Emotion, the title of theDVD The Road to Freedom, including hisUS hits Don’t Pay the Ferryman and The Lady In Red and many more.

As a bonus, there is an interview on the DVD, where you can see how down-to-earth and humble Chris de Burgh lives and prepares for the concert. There's also a bit where it shows his fans getting ready for the show and also C de B talking about his love of wine. This shows his personal side. This DVD concert is absolutely incredible. Intercut with background visuals and close-ups of the audience, a must have for all Chris-de-Burgh fans. Highly recommend.
