The Making of The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

No band, its musicians complimented each other perfectly, musically as did the Pink Floyd. I hate to say this, but Syd's departure was the blessing in disguise for Pink Floyd. A few might agree and a few might disagree.

I am blessed to have lived in the era that these musicians were together. Pink Floyd has had a profound effect on me and they were also part of my second book ‘The Great Rock Music Quiz Book’ and I am thankful for this.

‘Dark Side..’ is in the top 5 of my most cherished and favourite albums. I started listening Pink Floyd as a young lad in college. Years later I've been 'Pink Floyded'. It's an addiction, it creeps into you and rests there for the rest of your life. To me it's not music, it's something divine, something from another world. Wondrous to know how they created this music. And this pick is a wonderful documentary, that took me back to the early 70's.

Roger Waters mentioning that once you find your passion, you take grasp of it to David Gilmour talking about success. One thing I like about the band is that they all made it through success without destroying themselves via drugs or personal abuse.

There can never be another album such as this, I look forward to that day, but wonder if it will come. An album that will stand the test of time for sure.

Sadly Pink Floyd ended in 1984. But no doubt, Pink Floyd would be listened by the future generations of future generations. I've got all the albums of them and even after listening thousands of times, I still can’t get enough of the band.

Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ turned 50 years in 2023 which perhaps makes it seem easy to dismiss as an artifact of a bygone era. This DVD gives a detailed look at the production of the biggest album in the history of progressive rock and one of the best-selling albums of all time.

This is the story, told from the inside by the participants, of the creation of a masterpiece. ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ is the album that dramatically transformed Pink Floyd from art house faves to global stadium superstars. Prior to 1973, Pink Floyd maintained a relentless gigging schedule and by the time they came to record ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ had already created many of the basic tracks "Dark Side Of The Moon" would be the first Pink Floyd (post Syd Barrett) album where Roger Waters would supply all the lyrics around a concept. With the timeless qualities of its production and musicality, allied to the hypnotic evocation of its central themes - alienation, paranoia, madness, war and death, ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ would become the album that would dominate the 70s and 80s (with a record number of 741 consecutive weeks in the charts).

This program takes a track-by-track look at the making of the 1973 album. All four members of the band at that time Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright are featured here in exclusive interviews. Roger, David, and Richard play songs and demonstrate themes from the album. Engineer Alan Parsons (the original engineer) takes us through the multi-track tapes giving a unique insight into the musical fabric of the record and the programme s illustrated with archive footage.

‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ with its combination of great songs, inventive effects and one of the best known sleeves ever, tapped into the world’s collective subconscious and became a landmark in Rock history and a truly Classic Album.

If there are a handful of albums in the rock universe that deserve a bells-and-whistles DVD treatment, ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ is clearly among them. In the '70s and '80s, the classic 1973 album by Pink Floyd remained on the Billboard 200 for a staggering 741 consecutive weeks, a record that will likely stand forever. Echoing themes of alienation, paranoia, and death, it is a dreamy, often trancelike tour through the subconscious of Floyd lyricist Roger Waters.

This 84-minute DVD offers a track-by-track look at the making of ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, featuring interviews with band members Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, plus rare acoustic versions of Breathe and Brain Damage.

For those fans interested in the story behind the crafting of one of rock's true landmark records, this is the DVD you need to watch. Discussions involve the studio-specific techniques used to create the clock loops on Time, the cash register sounds on Money, and the vocal chorus on The Great Gig in the Sky.

So what is the Dark Side of the Moon?

People often say “the dark side of the moon” while referring to the lunar face that can’t be seen from the earth, it always refers to the far side of the moon, which despite pointing away from the earth sees as much sunlight as the side facing the earth. So the dark side of the moon isn’t actually dark. The reason why it exists is because of a physics phenomenon known as the tidal locking. In the next few sections, we will be getting into more details about it. Now, let us know in detail about the dark side of the moon.

Whenever we look at the sky in the night to see the moon, it appears the same every time. No matter how we see the moon or from where we see the moon, it always seems to feature the same landscape. The side of the moon which we are never able to see being on earth is known as the ‘dark side of the moon.’ It would be wrong to say that this side of the moon is considered as the dark side of the moon is dark. This side never faces the earth and is visible only from space.

Dark Side of the Moon Discovery

Well, we cannot see the dark side of the earth because the moon is tidally locked to the earth. The earth rotates on its axis continuously and so does the moon. The time required by the Moon to rotate about its axis exactly matches to the time needed for orbiting the earth since earth and moon are tidally locked. In simple words, the rotational period and the orbital period of the moon are the same. Therefore, we can see only one side of the moon. In other words, we can say that due to the sync in rotation and revolution of earth and moon, only one side of the moon always faces the earth, thereby another side which is never seen by us is called the dark side.
