This concert is 22 years old, but then in this DVD we see a then rising young singer/songwriter John Mayer who was a heartthrob for many young girls and chances are that many still love the man even now.
Recorded live at the Oak Mountain Amphitheater in Birmingham, Alabama on 12th September 2002, this DVD captures all the magic, wit and warmth of John Mayer in concert. Featuring live versions of songs from John's albums, the double-platinum-selling independent debut ‘Inside Wants Out’, to the album fans loved ‘Room for Squares’ (2001). this certainly hit all the high points. There’s all this, as well as previously unreleased new material. The DVD showcases all of John's talents, his passionate singing, his lyrical guitar work, his off-the-wall humor.
The nearly two-hour concert showcases Mayer's songs with his versatile three-piece band, but also his surprisingly deft guitar playing (check out his Hendrix-saturated styling’s on the unaccompanied Man on the Side).
Boyish good looks go a long way, but it’s the "from the heart" performance and the buzz of the concert experience that carries John Mayer in his concert DVD, not forgetting shots of the cheering crowds pushing him on. Mayer who is known for his introspective lyrics and whispery voice, comes through loud and clear in a style that's uniquely his own, but has been often compared to Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson.
As an added bonus; you'll join John backstage before the show for "Any Given Soundcheck;" and experience the refreshing candor of his reflections in "The Morning After" interview; and stroll through a fascinating photo gallery. There’s also an audio track with Mayer's comments about the songs. All in all, a worthy addition to the catalog of an artist who keeps getting better. This is a definite must own for John Mayer fans who I'm sure are all too familiar with his studio recordings. The renditions here carry far more punch and some fun and unexpected alternative lyrics.
Mayer has not made it to Indian shores so this is the closest you can see him in a concert, as if you were there, if you haven’t been to one of his tours. You will enjoy this.
If you are a John Mayer fan, there has been a lot of fantastic material in the years after this DVD, but this one is certainly a starter for fans, to set the stage for what was to come later. As an avid DVD concert collector of huge collection of music concerts, documentaries, biographies, this DVD is must have if you are a fan of John Mayer.
