12th Fail: Trial by Fire

Based on the real-life story of IPS Manoj Kumar Sharma and adapted from Anurag Pathak’s novel, ‘Twelfth Fail’ is written, directed, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film revolves around the struggles of Manoj Kumar (Vikrant Massey)- from overcoming financial hardships to becoming an IPS officer, and how his wife, IRS Shraddha Joshi (Medha Shankar), played a crucial role in his journey.

Set in Chambal, where cheating to pass exams is the norm, Manoj, a poor boy, attempts to pass his 12th grade by cheating. But to his dismay, a new police officer, DSP Dushyant Singh, stops the mass copying in school, causing all students, including Manoj, to fail. Instead of being discouraged by failure, he finds inspiration in DSP Dushyant Singh and dreams to become an officer like him someday and create a corruption-free society. But fate had other plans for him.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s commitment to portraying realism in the film yielded positive results. From casting Vikas Divyakirti, a real-life UPSC coaching centre owner, as the coach, to filming in actual UPSC preparation locations and featuring students who are genuinely preparing for UPSC exams, these choices enhanced the film's authenticity. Rangarajan Ramabadran’s cinematography is breathtaking, skillfully capturing the essence of the characters’ struggles and triumphs.

Vikrant has been outstanding in his portrayal of the character, considering it was quite challenging and different from all the characters he has played before. His nuanced performance breathes life into his character. His imperfections and insecurities make him real. Medha’s ability to convey emotions was truly remarkable. Sarita Joshi, as always, did an amazing job and stood out in her role as Manoj’s grandmother. Due credit should be given to Priyanshu Chatterjee, Anant V Joshi, and Anshumaan Pushkar for their amazing performances.

Although ‘12th Fail’ uses a common style of storytelling with a narrator, its uniqueness lies in the authenticity of the characters and the depth of its plot. All in all, a great story, interesting characters, emotional music, and brilliant acting.

In conclusion, this film serves as a reminder to all the youngsters out there that perseverance and resilience can lead to extraordinary achievements, and one always has the choice to restart after facing failure.
