England's Newest Hit Makers The Rolling Stones

They were a bunch of scruffy young British lads doing covers of their R&B and Blues heroes at the local clubs. They were struggling to come up with originals and their hit singles were by others, one of them coming from a certain Lennon-McCartney.

Madhumati – Salil Chowdhury

Songs in Hindi films have a unique role. They have to carry the narrative when you are watching the movie and they also have to stand tall as an independent entity when you are listening to them from your music system.

Avalon – Roxy Music

John Lennon once said that Glam rock is just rock’n’roll with lipstick. In the case of this last album from the pioneers of Glam rock, the entire make-up is missing, let alone the lipstick. And the resulting music is lush, poetic and mellow compared to their earlier edgy and quirkily ostentatious work.

We Belong Together – Mariah Carey – 12 Inch Single – Picture Disc

One of the very few picture discs in my collection, this one which I bought on my holiday when in London in 2005. Though there were many other artists LPs around, Mariah Carey’s saucy look on the cover disc seduced me into picking her up for a spin

Moondance – Van Morrison

However magnificent and landmark ‘Astral Weeks’ is considered today, the album failed at the charts and made very little money, when it was released in 1968 (isn’t that always the case with any masterpiece that is ahead of its time?). Purple Rain – Prince and the Revolution

I was halfway into writing my next LP review when the shocker came. Prince is dead. My first reaction was to consider it as an internet hoax. Ten minutes and some research later, it was a confirmed piece of news. Yet another musical giant gone.

Bob Dylan – Bob Dylan

This truly is a collector's edition or rather limited edition LP that consists of 13 tracks which is supposed to be the debut album of the great singer – songwriter. The LP comes in a clear record sleeve with no artwork, instead what you get is only a plastic sleeve, with no indication of the songwriters, producer or even the band members then.

At Filmore East – The Allman Brothers Band

With two good but little known albums behind them, the Southern rockers stepped on the stage of Filmore East, New York for three evenings in March 1971 and created history of sorts in the realm of live albums. It also turned The Allman Brothers Band into an overnight sensation with Duane Allman (guitars), younger brother Gregg Allman (vocals and keyboard) and Dicky Betts (guitars) burning bright.

Astral Weeks – Van Morrison

The truth is, that I’ve been trying to review this album for a long time now and every time I embark upon the task, I fail, miserably. So this time I just thought I shall write about my failures. I will try and write about why I am unable to write about this album.
