The Best of Uriah Heep

I have very fond memories of this album even though the track Sweet Lorraine simultaneously blew my then stereo`s speakers when the synthesizer kicked in at the start of the verse.

This album of songs from one of the most successful British rock band Uriah Heep is a must hear for any rock and prog rock music fan. It was released by Bronze Records and Mercury Records in three distinct editions with roughly the same songs, but different cover art and track listing. The first edition was released in 1974 in Canada, the second in 1975 in Europe and the third the following year in the US. The European edition (which I have), has songs like Lady in Black substituted by Suicidal Man. The compilation reached gold status in Germany.

The band has some of the most brilliant works of rock music under their name and have continued to be reckoning for over 40 years and more. In the 70s Prog Rock was in full swing with bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple hitting big time.

This collection is a wonderful pick for anyone who wants to go back in time and tune into some seriously good songs. The album of an entire generation at the dawn of the 70s kept in line with the major groups of the time.

The tracks don’t have a coherent storyline like some classic Prog Rock but it more than made up for any shortcomings with the high quality of the musicianship on display. The band fronted by guitarist Mick Box, presently consists of keyboardist Phil Lanzon, lead vocalist Bernie Shaw, drummer Russell Gilbrook, and bassist Dave Rimmer, who brought music in their own beautiful way. This album is packed with all the hits we have grown up listening to like Gypsy, Bird of Prey, Easy Livin, The Wizard, Lady in Black and Return to Fantasy among a few others.

Recommended for lovers of the genre.
